Team to have 1st practice match from Monday at Police
By Sean Devers
History will be made on January 15 in Antigua when Guyana begin their 2010 their campaign for their first title since 2002 against reigning limited overs champions Trinidad and Tobago in the first ever First Class Day/Night match to be played in the West Indies.
Guyana will then face defending champions Jamaica and CCC in back-to-back matches in Barbados before returning home to face Barbados and Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Cricket Development Officer Reon King informed that the team’s first practice match has been scheduled for the Police ground from Monday to Wednesday.
The 34-year-old King, who took 53 wickets from 19 Tests, said that a few players not in the 21-man touring party and stand-by list have been included for Monday’s match since four players in the Guyana 13-man squad to travel to Antigua are presently involved the 3-Test series between West Indies and Australia which ends tonight in Australia.
Apart from Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine and Travis Dowlin, 17-year-old stand-by pacer Andre Stoll who broke his finger yesterday playing in an under-19 game for his club Police, will also miss Monday’s game.
King said a replacement player will take Stoll’s place and according to a medical source the left-arm pacer, who broke his left thumb when he dived on the ground to celebrate a catch, could be out of action for 3 weeks and yesterday afternoon his hand was in a cast and sling.
King also said that since Guyana, who drew the bye in the opening round of the regional competition which starts on January 8, will play the first ever Day/Nigh regional first class game, he is hoping that that the team will be able to play a practice match under lights with the pink balls which will be used in the competition before the team depart Guyana next month.
“I have heard that the pink balls are not yet in the West Indies and I don’t think its ideal preparation to use it just days before a regional first class game,” King said
King said he is hoping for a practice match early next year but revealed that he understands that the (Guyana National) Stadium might be unavailable from early next year because of preparations for the 20/20 world which starts in Guyana on April 30.
Although a Demerara Cricket Board club final was played under lights recently at the Lusignan ground on the East Coast of Demerara, the Providence Stadium is the only venue in Guyana equipped with the standard of lights for a ‘proper’ cricket match and King is still hopeful that the government controlled venue could be made available to the national team for 3 days next month to facilitate the night game.
The Day/Nigh regional matches are scheduled to commence at 13:00hs and conclude at 20:00hrs and Dr Ernest Hilaire, Chief Executive Officer of the WICB, said the 2011 First-Class season includes day/night matches with pink balls with each team playing at least one match under lights.
Monday’s first practice match is scheduled to start at 09:30hrs each day and the players have been divided into 2 teams with 12 on the Guyana side and 14 on the Rest side.
King says the Captains will be named on Monday morning and talented but out-of-favor players like players like Leon Johnson, Steven Jacobs, Chris Barnwell, Vishal Singh, Rajendra Chandrika, Gajanand Singh and Deon Ferrier will have a chance to stake a claim for selection on the team after the 2nd round when the Guyanese West Indies players could be unavailable due to the ODI and 20/20 series which starts in Australia on February 4.
National under-19 wicket keeper Anthony Bramble is also included in the practice match ahead of his fellow Berbican Delbert Hicks who lost his place in the National side after a poor debut first class match earlier this year and an ordinary regional One-day competition behind the stumps.
