Linden teams continue to fall out of contention for the top prize in the 20th edition of the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament when two more were booted on day two at the GFC ground on Wednesday evening.
Two-time champions and three-time finalist’s Fruta Conquerors made light work of Eagles United as they flew to a 3-1 win becoming the second team after defending champions Pele to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Advancing to the group-of-16 stage was West Demerara’s Seawall FC who staved off a stern challenge from Rusal to secure victory and a date against the Guyana Defence Force next Wednesday at the same venue.
Conquerors, boasting a number of old stalwarts in their line-up also included some of their exciting young upcoming stars and never allowed the Eagles to settle into their stride. The city side through one of their stalwarts Lester ‘Puppy’ Peters cantered into the lead six minutes into the game slapping the ball past goalkeeper Ravin Choo.
Fourteen minutes later it was one of their {Conquerors} future stars who would double the lead, Manasseh Primo latching onto the ball to slip it past the hapless Choo again, Conquerors 2 Eagles 0.
But the Lindeners did not relax or accepted that they cannot challenge in a serious way, they kept going forward and worked the ball around which resulted in them pulling one back in the 28th minute through an Alestor Johnson goal.
Thereafter, Eagles enjoyed some good moments and came close to drawing equal but were not able to breach the defence and custodian Oswald Cornette. Conquerors at one point seemed to be tiring but the experience of the old stagers led by their Captain Neville Stanton brought them through.
They put the game beyond the reach of Eagles when the experienced Delon Williams rocked the nets in the first minute of added on time.
The opening game ended with Seawall FC, formerly Pouderoyen, turning back the challenge of Rusal. Goals by Cleveland Walcott one minute into added on time in the first half and their star forward Clement Browne in the 74th guided the West Side team into the next stage. Alestor Johnson pulled one back 7 minutes to full time but it was not enough to deny Seawall victory.
With their next opponents being the GDF, Seawall will certainly have to up their game a few notches against what is expected to be a rock solid Army unit which has been strengthened with the inclusion of players from the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force.
Rivalry intensifies this evening when the Kashif and Shanghai train moves to the Enmore Community Centre ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
Three games will be contested, the first a Women’s fixture in the GFF International Women’s tournament where Suriname will oppose Guyana/USA from 16:00hrs.
Debutants Riddm Squad and Ann’s Grove will then face off with the main clash between Sunburst Camptown and East Demerara Division One champs, Buxton United.
