National junior champion Anthony Downes will face off with Jeremy Miller this afternoon in the final of the Under-18 Division as play in the Banks DIH Masters Invitational Tennis Tournament resumes, at the Pegasus Hotel Hardcourts from 16.00 hrs.
An exciting contest is anticipated, but the hard-hitting Downes is favoured to maintain his dominance in what is expected to be the final appearance for both players at the junior level.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the marquee match-ups being the Men’s and Ladies finals.
In the Men’s final, national champion Phillip Squires takes on second-seeded Ezra Sue-Ho, while Ladies champion Carol Humphrey renews her rivalry against Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan.
Play on the first weekend was affected somewhat by rain but the GLTA was able to run off fourteen of the scheduled eighteen matches, with another two matches being won by walk-over.
Play was of a high standard with most matches going according to the pre-tournament seeding. Some favourites, however, will not be going on to the next round as they were knocked out by their lower ranked opponents.
In what was perhaps the match of the tournament to date, blistering play by the pair of Jeremy Miller and Jonathan Antczak forced the highly touted duo of Leyland Leacock and Ezra Sue-Ho out of the Men Doubles event with a 6-4, 6-1 score.
Also, the No. 2 Mixed Doubles pair of Phillip Squires and Aruna Ramrattan were upset, with Berbicians Godfrey Lowden and Carol Humphrey who beat them 6-3, 6-2. Although not managing an upset, top female junior Shawna Gentle gave multiple national champion Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan quite a scare, before succumbing 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
The Banks Masters Invitational is the season ending event of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association for 2009 and involves the top players for the past two years.
The tournament is being played on a knock-out basis over two rounds in 8 categories.
