Dear Editor,
David Dabydeen’s strange response to accusation of nominating President Jagdeo for Nobel Prize becomes even more bizarre when he offers to do the same for Valerie Amos as a Guyanese “person of international distinction” – this crime is then compounded by including her with such fine citizens and persons of high moral standing and intellect as Sir Shridath Ramphal and Clive Thomas.
Is this the same Valerie Amos, once described by Darcus Howe as “a white tool”, who was plucked from relative political obscurity by the mendacious Tony Blair and recruited to the “Blair Witch” New Labour Project?
Her list of misdemeanours begins at the United Conference on Racism 2001, in Durban South Africa where the “good” Baroness Amos as Foreign Office Minister for Africa, Caribbean & Overseas Territories affirmed the British government’s position that the Atlantic slave trade could not be condemned as a crime against humanity. A quite staggering statement from someone of African Guyanese descent!
In 2003 she was then sent to Africa to “persuade” African nations into supporting one of the most heinous crimes of our times, the war in Iraq. Fortunately, she was unsuccessful, but when Claire Short finally resigned in protest she happily stepped into her position as Secretary of State for International Development.
Over a million British citizens took to the streets of London to protest this blatant racist imperialist adventure, but the “good lady” and Blair to this day remain unrepentant.
Is this an exercise in servility and obsequiousness, lack of morality, or just plain political opportunism and corruption of the soul so prevalent in this era of 21st century corporate globalisation?
In 2004, one is then completely dumbfounded to learn that “the good lady” has delivered the annual Walter Rodney Lecture at Mr. Dabydeen’s site of “work” – the University of Warwick. Apart from nationality, what moral or political values could she possibly have in common with with Walter Rodney?
Perhaps, this last incident has some resonance when trying to make sense of David Dabydeen’s recent confusing and contradictory response in SN.
