– illegal gun seizures down
Someone has infiltrated the police firearm licencing system and has issued what appeared to be a genuine document with a forged signature.
This was disclosed by Police Commissioner Henry Greene at the force’s annual end-of-year awards ceremony at the Police Officers Mess annex yesterday.
The Commissioner said that the discovery was made following the seizure of an illegal firearm on Wednesday.
“A firearm was found and with some investigation into the firearm there was a genuine licence, but the signature was forged. Somebody is penetrating the system,” the police commissioner said.
Greene stated that the force has evidence of a ring that involves guns-for- rent, which has been facilitating the commission of criminal activities by bandits.
However the commissioner said that the vigilance of police patrols have forced a reduction in the amount of illegal firearms on the streets.
So far this year, the police have seized 92 illegal firearms – a drop from last year when 134 such weapons were recovered.
Greene pointed out that maybe there is a decline in trafficking of illegal firearms into Guyana but the intensity of the police mobile patrol units have been significantly responsible for the reduction of illegal weapons being found.
“We have evidence of the rental of firearms by bandits; we have that evidence. The drop in the seizure of firearms may be linked to the alert patrols where people are afraid to walk with firearms because of the regular and consistent checks,” Greene said. This posture has also resulted in a decline in the incidence of fatal shootings by the police.
For last year, 17 persons were fatally shot by the police while 12 have met their end by similar means so far this year.
“People are talking about extra-judicial killings and when you compare to last year and the year before, we are still quite lower…”Greene stated.
