Almost one month after being on the run, the man who was burnt his colleague while on afishing trip in Suriname waters has been arrested.
This news paper was told that the man who had been on the run since November 7, last was caught sometime yesterday in the Pomeroon area. He has since been transferred to Berbice where he will assist the police there with investigations.
On November 7 last a fight reportedly broke out onboard the ‘Savie Ï’ resulting in one man’s death and another being severely burnt about his entire body.
The deceased is 48 year-old Shankar Kumar, of Uitvlugt Estate Road, while his colleague Trevor Williams was burnt. Initial reports are that just after 14:00 hours on November 7, one crewmember on the boat said he was striking, thus angering his other colleagues. As Williams went to make peace the man doused him with a corrosive substance and attacked the others, forcing Kumar and another crewmember to jump into the river.
Kumar never made it to safety. The injured Williams, two other crewmembers and the attacker stayed onboard the vessel. The attacker then sought help from a passing vessel after telling them that they were attacked by pirates. The injured Williams was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital as the attacker fled. Kumar’s body was found a few days after the incident and handed over to the family.
