Three youths were yesterday remanded for the HBTV Channel 9 heist after making a court appearance before the Acting Chief Magistrate. Two were charged with two counts of break and enter and larceny, while the other with receiving stolen property.
One of the two charged with break and enter was a former employee of the television station.
GTI Student Christopher Luther, 18, of 557 Go-Slow Avenue East LaPenitence; Ivan Garraway, 20, of 240 Freeman Street, East La Penitence; and Kamal Maraj, 23, of 174 D’Abreu Street, Kitty; were all remanded yesterday after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
With respect to Luther and Garraway, it is alleged on December 1 they broke and entered the editing room of HBTV Channel 9 and stole one hard drive, one Sony camera, a keyboard, a mouse, one computer screen and one CPU all a total value of $437,000 and property of HBTV Channel 9.
It is also alleged that the two, on December 9 broke and entered the transmission room of HBTV and stole two video cameras, one computer, two DVD players and one audio mixer all at a total value of $800,000 property of the said HBTV.
While with respect to Maraj it is alleged that on December 10 he received from Luther one keyboard, one mouse, one CPU and a monitor with a total value of $317,000 knowing same to be stolen property of HBTV Channel 9.
They all pleaded not guilty to the charges. Luther and Garraway were both represented by attorney at law Mohammed Zafar while Maraj was represented by attorney at law Adrian Thompson.
Thompson, in an application for bail for his client said that Garraway was an employee at the car wash his client owns. He added that his client also owns an electronic shop which does repairs.
He said that the items were brought to the shop for repairs and as such his client should not have been charged. Thompson said that his client is financially capable of purchasing, brand new, any of the items presented to him.
Zafar in his application for his two clients stated that his clients are no flight risks and that they have been co-operating with the police fully.
Chief Executive Officer of HBTV, Charles Griffith, was present in court. He said that the television station is unable to operate at full capacity due to the incident. He requested that the magistrate order the police to release the components because the station is operating at a handicap basis since the parts are very essential to the operation of the station.
Police prosecutor, Stephen Telford, told the court that the police have recovered several items and that these are currently lodged at the East La Penitence Police Station. He listed the items recovered as a keyboard, a mouse, a video camera, some cables and a CPU and added that they were all recovered from Maraj’s house.
Telford said that Luther is a former guard at the television station and was dismissed. He added that on December 15 about 03:00 hrs, the two Luther and Garraway, were seen clearly on the surveillance cameras removing items from the premises. Telford said the two made well their escape after being confronted by the guard whom they fought.
He added that they have indeed co-operated with the police and under caution even admitted to the offenses. Nevertheless he still objected to bail for them since the incident to which they admitted had occurred before.
Griffith intervened to state that Luther was only dismissed at the station because of his incompetence in the sense that he would leave the place unattended.
The three were then remanded by the Magistrate and are expected to return to court on Friday.
