– CPGs get ATV, motorcycles, boat and engine and pick-up truck
Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, has once again warned that his Ministry will not be dealing lightly with those who use for their personal satisfaction, state vehicles and other assets.
The Minister issued the warning during a presentation of a motor pick-up, an All Terrain Vehicle, boat and engine and two motorcycles to members of three Community Policing organizations.
Minister Rohee said that too often he has been hearing about vehicles being abused by persons to whom they have been given. These people use the vehicles for their personal self and family, and for other purposes that do not conform to the standard operating procedures of Community Policing.
“I would like to issue a warning once again that any time we receive information about the use of any one of these vehicles for purposes other than which they were assigned, the Ministry of Home Affairs would lose no time or would lose no effort in taking back these vehicles …to ensure that they are not abused and that they are used for Community Policing activities,” the Home Affairs Minister said.
According to Rohee, the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) which will go a far way in allowing better mobility for the CPG in Bartica and its surrounding areas was only recently given legal recognition in Guyana.
This is despite its prevalent use by miners operating in Guyana’s interior.
Rohee said that now that the law recognizing these types of vehicles has been passed, and the use of these vehicles brought in conformity with the legal requirements of the country, it is necessary for them to be registered and to be given licence plates, permitting it to be used on public roads as well as in the interior.
He said that following a meeting with the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association and the Guyana Revenue Authority earlier this year, a four-month waiver was granted for those who possess ATVs to regularise the status of their vehicles.
“My understanding is that deadline has passed but the stakeholders have not met with the obligations which we agreed at that meeting. It means that we still have a number of these ATVs in the country that are not in conformity with the law and this is not good,” Rohee stated.
He said that the Ministry of Home Affairs would be setting the pace with the registering of the ATV that was handed over yesterday.
“I think that this vehicle will come in useful for the community policing group that will be using it in the Bartica area because as you know that area is very extensive and there are places where it is not advisable for four by fours to be used,” Rohee said. The motorcycles, he said, are quite regularly used by CPGs in various parts of the country.
And the outboard engine along with the accompanying boat will address the reverain communities.
Speaking on behalf of the CPGs, Bernard Gomes expressed thanks to the Ministry, which he said has been showing commitment to the task of improving the concept of community policing.
“We pledge to take your warning seriously and to use these resources for the purposes that they were given,” Gomes said.
