The National Association of Agricultural Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) in a press release Tuesday stated that they fully support the struggle carried out by the members of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) for wages increase of the sugar industry.
They believe that the three per cent increase to any sugar worker in 2009 is atrocious, miserable and should not be the basis to move the industry forward.
NACCIE claims that it is aware of the situation of GuySuCo and its relationship to international sugar prices. He said that GAWU is also aware. The unions also claim that they are doing all in there power to assist in the Company’s endeavour to become a profit making industry as early as possible.
The sugar company is contending that the strikes by unionized workers in the industry are a major cause for the Company’s financial position. The unions say that this is mischievous and defeating for sugar.
More than ever, the Unions have been highlighting the poor conditions in the field where the canes are produced and the many changes in Strategic Plans by the Corporation, according to NAACIE.
It is the view of NAACIE that the reduction of canes to GuySuCo, especially in the Demerara area, was planned and executed by the corporation. The union added that this is with a view to take sugar out of Demerara and into Berbice, in keeping with advice given by International Financial Institutions a few years ago.
The canes expected to be produced by Skeldon Plant are still to materialize, hence less cane, less sugar, at less price, equal no profit and workers’ pain, NACCIE stated. Guysuco needs to do a research on the low production of sugar in 1989 and think about the statement ‘those who forget the mistakes of the past are condemned to repeat them.”
NACCIE believes that whatever is the Corporation’s belief about the loyalty of all the workers in the Sugar Industry. They should be warned that the belief is quickly being eroded by the Corporations treatment of its unionized workers.
Calls for more sacrifice by sugar workers will be falling on deaf ears if workers do not regain the belief and trust from Guysuco.
NACCIE thinks GuySuCo should remember that you get the type and quality of work for which you pay, and Third Parties should also take that into consideration. Mere financial arguments in Tribunals for workers wages and conditions of work in labour intensive industries are bound to displease any side in grievances. Especially if an adjustment in direction of any side could be made. NACCIE thinks Guysuco can make Capital adjustments and Financial Agreements with its lenders to push this industry forward, faster, if it is willing to involve the workers in the industry.
