Several more Customs officials have been posted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) to cater for the large volume of passenger expected to return home for the holidays.
According to Commissioner-General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Khurshid Sattaur, the staff boost will help to facilitate the easy clearing of the passengers’ personal effects without delay.
According to Sattaur, clearance should take a matter of minutes to the experienced staff.
Senior officers of the GRA will also be present at the airport to assist passengers with queries they may have and also to monitor the performance of the staff on duty in order to ensure that transactions are processed in a transparent manner.
This year, Guyana is expected to see more families arriving than last year which saw a downturn in bookings due to the global economy crisis.
Airline officials, while confident that the arrivals would do better than last year, had said that from bookings, it would not surpass the high levels of two Christmases ago.
