Void of any ceremonial unfolding yesterday, scores gathered at the Ruimzeight Crematorium to pay their final respects to the late Minister within the Ministry of Education, Dr. Desrey Fox. Following a lengthy procession from the Umana Yana in Georgetown the cortege finally made its way to the Crematorium site on West Coast Demerara.
Among those who gather to pay their last respect were the Acting President Samuel Hinds, and other Government Ministers as well as some school children.
Every public building along the West Demerara flew black flags, as everyone seemed to be mourning the loss.
When the cortege arrived, the late Minister’s remains were placed on the pyre. As the fire was set some family members were seen consoling each other.
Earlier, hundreds converged at the Umana Yana where a thanksgiving service to celebrate Minister Fox’s life was held.
On Friday the Minister succumbed to injuries she sustained in an accident earlier in the week. The Minister’s car collided with an ambulance. According to the ambulance driver, witnesses and others involved, the accident occurred about 18:00hrs on Tuesday. From all accounts the ambulance was heading north along Vlissengen Road with its siren blaring and lights flashing when the car attempted to cross its path and was slammed.
The left side of motorcar, PKK8875, was smashed in on impact and the back windscreen exploded. One witness at the scene of the accident said, “When the ambulance slammed the Minister’s car it spin and hit into the front of the Apache taxi and the Minister and a baby pitched out the back window.”
