– Palace De Leon promises “reinforcement”
By Edison Jefford
The Hotels that will accommodate the respective teams for the first Friendly International Women’s Tournament in Guyana that starts today at the Providence National Stadium are expected to beef up their on-site security practices.
General Manager of Palace De Leon Hotel, where the local team is apparently encamped, Leon Rutherford, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that his premises already has cameras and will bear additional security officers for the team.
This newspaper understands that the other Hotels that will host the Suriname and Guyana (USA) teams will also have similar measures in place. The security measure is part of the national federation’s plan to ensure maximum protection.
“We are putting in some reinforcement; we have cameras in the passageways that pick up movement and we will be having an additional security officer. Generally, we will put the security in,” Rutherford informed when contacted.
Security eyebrows were raised when a local female player raised an alarm about prowling outside her bedroom window. Rutherford acknowledged the complaint, indicating that he was able to acquire some intelligence on the matter.
“Our cameras were able to pick up some movement, but no entry was made,” the General Manager noted after the player had related to this newspaper that the mesh at the window was cut and a few louvers removed for entry.
The player, who requested anonymity, had said that the entry attempt woke her up and an alarm was made when she shouted. An official subsequently descended to her floor when she “hollered” and the alleged prowler fled on foot.
“I don’t know if that happened. When I went to the room I didn’t see that. We’re not sure if it was a break and entry attempt. There is a fence at the back of the Hotel with a camera pointing straight at it so we would know,” Rutherford said.
The Palace De Leon General Manager made it clear that the principle outcome to observe was that no one was harmed. He said that it must be noted that it is a women’s team and a lot of male prowlers will be interested in them.
Head Coach of the local national team, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover told Kaieteur Sport that he has no knowledge of the incident when contacted yesterday. He said that it was not raised at the team’s practice session yesterday morning.
“I wasn’t informed about that. I have no information about that. As far as I know, that did not transpire. No one brought anything to my attention,” Dover said, as the local Football Federation prepares to host the historic tournament.
