Sprint challenge rises with Saul, Clarke’s emergence
By Edison Jefford
Rawle Greene had a quiet year in 2009, but next year the former national sprint champion aims to return with a bang in two disparate disciplines; Track and Field and Bodybuilding will engage Greene’s attention in the 2010 Season.
Greene’s decade of dominance came to an abrupt halt at the National Senior Trials earlier this year when an injury sidelined him. Since then, two prodigies have emerged and those performances somewhat overshadowed Greene.
Michael Saul won the 100m at the National Trials and became an instant sensation for the mega Joint Services Games. However, an injury at that meet kept Saul from living up to a lot of the hype that surrounded his appearance.
Whether Saul was beaten into submission or injuries caused his underperformance is now a moot point. Quincy Clarke emerged winner of the 100m in a performance that placed him unofficially on par with both Saul and Greene.
It is against the emergence of Saul and Clarke that Greene will return to the track after his hiatus this year. Then to make things even more challenging for him, he wants to actively remain engage to his second love, Bodybuilding.
“Rawle Greene will be competing in both sports; my aim is to compete in both,” he stated yesterday, adding that while he understands the challenges, a formula can be derived for a disciplined approach that will cause integration. “Athletes need to get stronger. It is like killing two birds with one stone. People know the challenges athletes face here in Guyana. I was doing some preparation. It’s just being in a position to improve from last year,” Greene continued.
There is less doubt that a fully fit Greene will prove to be a force to reckon with next year but will force new challenges with Saul and Clarke at the start line. Both men are looking to permanently cement their place in Guyana.
However, Greene’s confidence is soaring, and he believes that there will be fewer hurdles in his path with his concentrated effort. He said that the 2010 Calendar of Events is not in circulation yet, but he anticipates a rigorous season.
