Guyana and US-based Guyanese teams face off at Stadium this evening
By Franklin Wilson
Local football fans are in for exciting International football but this time from the female side of things when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) organised International tournament featuring Guyanese teams – local and the USA – who will match skills with their counterparts from Suriname.
This first of the three tournament matches will be played this evening from 17:00hrs at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence between the Guyanese teams, local and USA.
Both teams have been hard at training and while the ultimate aim is to put together a solid and competitive Guyana team, the lasses will aim to show off their skills for their respective teams.
Local head coach Wayne Dover speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday said he is quite satisfied with the general attitude and commitment of his charges whose preparation included technical, tactical and physical work.
“They have responded well to the training and have been gelling as a unit. I am also pleased with their competitiveness especially in the two warm up matches we have played.
They looked well against a tough GFC Under-15 side on Tuesday evening, drawing that game 1-1.
I am looking forward to this tournament and ultimately, a strong Guyana national team.
I think that the future of the game in Guyana is exciting and I urge the fans to come out and support.”
The USA team was taken through their paces at the Guyana Defence Force ground after arriving in Guyana in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
The change of climate from the cold to the tropics did not seem to have any effects on the lasses who displayed good ball touch and control.
Technical Director of the entire female programme Mark Rodrigues noted that he was really keyed up and looking forward to a great tournament. He said with the players coming from all across the USA they were trying to find the right mix during yesterday afternoon’s session. “There is lots of talent among these players here and I am confident they will get the job done and not only put on a good show but all the ladies in due course will make all Guyana proud.”
The average age of the USA Guyanese team is 20; two of the players are 16 year olds. Rodrigues is also urging all to come out and support the tournament by the thousands.
Tomorrow at the Enmore ground, Guyana USA will face Suriname from 16:00hrs; on Saturday at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground Guyana local tackles Suriname while on Sunday at the Blairmont Community Centre ground also from 16:00hrs the two Guyana teams will go head to head again.
Matches tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday, will all be played as supporting games at the Kashif and Shanghai tournament matches.
Meanwhile, the Surinamese team arrived yesterday around 15:00hrs and will train this morning from 09:00hrs at the Eve Leary ground.
