Dear Editor,
I share my thoughts as a cash crop farmer for more than 20 years to respond to Mr. Kenrick Hunte’s assumptions that Guyana’s agriculture sector is in a downward spiral as was published on Monday, December 14, 2009.
There seem to be a misconception amongst segments of our population for political or other reasons that our agriculture sector is not performing as it should and rightly so, especially since we have vast land and fresh water resources.
However, we should not neglect where we came from as a nation and disregard the many hurdles we have overcome to where we are today….a country that is self sufficient in food production.
As a farmer like many others, I take great pride in this fact that Guyana is food secure.
We know what it means to till our farms despite weather conditions (hot sun or heavy rain), market price, etc.
We stay firm to our commitment to cultivate lands and provide fresh wholesome food for local consumption and export.
The Government has recognised the importance of farmers as the Ministry of Agriculture has made numerous interventions to ensure farmers cultivate their lands.
Several new initiatives by the Minister of Agriculture have greatly assisted farming communities like mine to cultivate virgin lands and develop abandoned lands as agriculture is a lucrative venture.
Many of us are of the belief that agriculture is similar slavery, but it is not so today. Farming is a means of earning a decent livelihood and the likes of Mr. Hunts need to recognise this and take periodic visits to various farming communities and I guarantee your amazement at the constant expansion of agriculture due to farmers’ perseverance with Government’s support.
Mr. Hunte’s misconception is unfortunate to us farmers and I do hope that he will soon come to the realisation of the current state of Guyana’s agriculture sector; one that is modern and evolving with innovative technologies.
