Eight matches have been completed in the opening round of the 20-team Barakat Brothers 20/20 Knockout Cricket Competition on the West Demerara and there were wins for All Youths, Meten-Meer-Zorg A, Cornelia (CI), Windsor Forest, Leonora, Meten-Meer-Zorg ‘B’ and Independence. Two first round matches remain to complete the first round.
At Uitvlugt – Windsor Forest beat Zeelugt on a better run-rate. Windsor Forest scored 147-7 in 20 overs as Lalter Sukhnand top-scored with 41 and was supported by skipper Mohanram Chaitram (38). Bowling for Zeelught, Mahendra Ratanlall 2-26 and Deokienanan Maniram 2- 37 were the best bowlers. In reply Zeelugt were 33 without loss in 5.2 overs when rain stopped play.
At Meten-Meer-Zorg West – Defending 20/20 champions Meten-Meer-Zorg ‘A’ beat Zeeburg on a better run-rate. Batting first the host collapsed from 68-3 to 123 all out in 19.1 overs. Mahendra Nandkishore made 36 while Rakesh Goberdhan (19) and Deonauth Baksh (16) supported. Bowling for Zeeburg skipper Mandalall Doodnariane (3-18), Timur Mohamed (2-21) and Amrit Jairam (2-19) did the damage with the ball.
In reply Zeeburg were 47-1 in eight overs when rain stopped play.
At Uitvlugt – All Youths beat Windsor Forest M.Y.O by six wickets in a match reduced to ten-over per side contest.
Windsor Forest M.Y.O scored 85-3 in 10 overs with Mohammed Mizamurdeen hitting 43. All Youth in reply reached 87-4 with Anand Gangadeen making 33, Sewchand Narine 22 not out and Deoram Persaud 17.
At Uitvlugt – Leonora beat La Grange by 17 runs. Leonora made 127-5 from their 20 overs- Jitender Kishore scored 42 and Ravendra Ramnarine supported with 37. Bowling for La Grange Ameer Kalamadeen 2-21 was the best bowler – La Grange in reply reached 110 all out in 17.2 overs with right-hander Samuel Fredericks who scored a quick-fire 65 with four 6s and four 4s in a loosing cause. Bowling for Leonora Mahendra Persaud 3-6 and Rakesh Singh 2-11 bowled well for the winners.
At CI – CI beat McGill by six wickets. McGill made 108 all out in 19.3 overs. Gansham Hardial top scored with 36 while Naresh Bedesi and Mahadeo Ramotar made 20 each. Bowling for the hosts, left arm spinner Shaun Jairaj (4-20), Bisram Thomas (3-20) and Brahmin Bhowandat (3-13) shared the wickets for C I.
In reply the host reached 110-4 in 17.1 overs with Ameer Khan making 33 not out, and Bisram Thomas 32 not out. Shaun Jairaj supported with 17 for the winners as Budram Sugrim took 2-17.
At Meten-Meer-Zorg West – Meten-Meer-Zorg B beat Parika Rangers by 30 runs. The host crashed to 100 all out in 15.3 overs, after being well placed at 51 without loss, opener Troy Khan top-scored with 37 which included six 4s and a 6 while Ashim Bashir supported with 23. Youghister Bachan took 3-20 Dobraj Singh 3-24 and Samuel Decamp 2-29.
Rangers could only reach 70 all out in 15.2 overs as Youghister Bachan (19) and Rovin Sewnarine (11) were the only batsmen to reached double figures. Arshad Ali (3-8), Atree Singh (2-8) and Feroze Barakat (2-8) were the best bowlers for the winners.
At Uitvlugt – Independence beat the host by 49 runs- batting first Independence scored 128-9 from 20 overs. Anand Bharat hit 25, Hamid Azeez 24 and Sunil Ramdat 22.
Bowling for Uitvlugt Deon Carew (3-18) and Troy Amsterdam (3-18) did the damage with the ball. In reply Uitvlugt Crashed to 79 all out in 15.2 overs as David Alert (3-12) and Hamid Azeez (3-14) did the damage for the winners.
At Meten-Meer-Zorg West – Rising Storm gained a walk over from Devonshire Castle.
Meanwhile, the competition committee has fined and banned Joel Ramsahai of Zeeburg sports club for two years in all cricket organized and sponsored by Barakat Brothers after the player failed to accept the umpire’s decision on the field.
When the umpire awarded the match to Meten-Meer-Zorg A due to a better run-rate, Ramsahai proceeded to destroy the Umpire’s copy of the run-rate system.
The competition continues this weekend with seven matches.
