Acting Chief Magistrate, Melissa Robertson, sentenced Carl Cato, 26, a taxi driver to 18 months in prison on Tuesday. The man, who was charged with simple larceny, broke down into tears after the sentence.
He then begged his mother to forgive him.
Cato, 26, of 38 East La Penitence on December 10, stole a gas stove valued $50,000 and a refrigerator worth $102,000 from his mother, Kim Cave. Cato pleaded guilty to the charge.
He explained that he only did it because he was experiencing financial difficulties. He said that he took the items with intention to sell them.
He added that he did not sell the stove but he pawned the refrigerator for $10,000. He said that the stove was recovered. Cato stated that he wanted to get back his license since it was damaged by his mother when she washed his clothes.
He added that the only way the fridge was not recovered was because the guy, to whom he pawned it, declared in the presence of the police that he did not know him. He claimed that he had only taken a gas bottle from the house prior to this incident.
His mother who was present in court, told the magistrate that she tried with him. She said he stole from the house before and that may be a result of him smoking.
She added that he is not in want.
“He gets everything he wants from me” she said. She went on to say that she gave him money on two previous occasions to get his licence with intention that he would stop his smoking habits. She added that she even attempted to take him to rehab but it proved futile.
