Dear Editor,
Barbados enjoyed an early Christmas present on 15 December 1989 by outplaying Guyana two games to one in a Best of Three Goodwill International Series at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. T
he series was organised to compensate for the cancellation of the 1989 Caricom Championship in Antigua because of Hurricane Hugo.
Guyana contested game one with debutants Roylon Jones, Keith Bowen, Gregory Wyles and Wayne Andries, and immediately found the going tough against a seasoned Barbados line up. Only the charismatic Captain Leon Christian reached double figures with 14 points as the Bajans ran away with game one 74 to 55. Rookie Wayne Andries scored 9 points, veteran Robert Byass 8 points and Gregory Wyles 6 points.
An embarrassing incident brought a premature end to game two with 9 seconds remaining to game time, an unruly spectator pelted a Barbadian player from the stands, but the Bajans had already established an unassailable lead of 12 points with 9 seconds on the game clock remaining.
Again inspirational skipper Leon Christian led all scorers with 23 points – Auric Tappin scored 16 points and Ray Williams 10 points.
In game three Guyana saved the best for last with a classic display of brilliant team basketball, trouncing Barbados by 19 points – 85 to 66 with veteran ball handler Mark Agard calling plays after missing the first two matches.
Christian, Tappin and Robert Cadogan ran amok: Barbados had no answers for “Mr. Cool” Christian on the low block and Tappin rediscovered his (1988) best offensive form while Cadogan enjoyed one of his most productive offensive game in national colours. Skipper Christian finished with 24 points, Tappin 22 points and Cadogan 18 points.
Christian with an average of over 20 points per game was named the series’ Most Valuable Player.
