Led by a swashbuckling hundred (the first of the tournament) by Guyana and West Indies player Shemaine Campbell, the Rose Hall Town Metro (RHTM) team crushed West Berbice by a whopping 307 runs to advance to the national semi-finals of the Guyana Cricket Board sponsored Women’s tournament.
The star-studded RHT Metro, consisting of Guyana’s only three female West Indies players amassed a massive 376-4 off their 40 overs and then bundled out West Berbice for a paltry 69 in 17.4 overs.
Playing at the Area “H” ground in the Berbice Zone of the tournament, West Berbice led by National player Natasha Gangoo won the toss and invited RHT Metro to take first strike, a decision they soon regretted as West Indies player and National vice captain Shemaine Campbell and opening partner Melanie Henry put together an opening stand of 186 in 22 overs before Henry departed, caught and bowled by Gangoo for a well played 63 (8 x 4, 1 x 6).
Campbell did not let up despite the loss of Henry and raced to the first century of the tournament, eventually going for a brilliant 112 which was decorated with 19 spanking boundaries and one six. Campbell’s stumps were rolled over by Steffee Rodney with the score on 202-2 in the 25th over.
West Indies all-rounder Tremayne Smartt and the aggressive Tessa Parks continued to take the West Berbice bowling apart as they added 86 for the 3rd wicket before Smartt was dismissed for 40.
Another West Indies all-rounder Erva Giddings joined Parks and they added 80 for the 4th wicket before a tiring Parks fell short of what would have been a well deserved hundred, bowled by Gangoo in the final over.
Parks’ innings contained 17 fours. Giddings was unbeaten on 38 and Nirmala Sewdat on 2 as RHT Metro ended on a record 376-4. Gangoo took 2-42 from her 8 overs.
In reply West Berbice were bundled out for 69 in 17.4, medium pacer Shenella Mc Bean who took a hat-trick ended with figures of 3-8. RHT Metro will play Georgetown in the National semi-finals tomorrow at the Area “H” ground.
