Zenyatta, Irish Gel and Sweet Romance tasted sweet victories when the Port Mourant Turf Club staged its Horse Race Meeting last Sunday, at the Club’s facility.
In the feature race, Irish Gel was in top form and showed no signs of a long lay- off, crushing the field to win the C & Lower Class over a distance of One Mile, while Zenyatta and Sweet Romance were also in imperious form, humiliating their respective fields by more than 6 lengths each en route to impressive wins.
Irish Gel of the Singh’s stable with Kumar Singh aboard was always in contention as the horses broke away from the starting gates. Jockey Kumar Singh made full use of the first opening that came his way and allowed Irish Gel to go to the front where they never looked back, opening a sizeable lead, before cantering home for an easy win and the sumptuous $350,000 first prize along with the coveted Banks DIH trophy.
Miss Orient of the Habibullah Stables, Sir Balajee and World Class rounded out the top four in the 1650 metres event
As if not to be out done, Sweet Romance of the Kris Jagdeo and Son Construction stables was even more clinical and stylish in taking the highly competitive 3 year-old race for horses born and bred in Guyana and the West Indies over a distance of 1300m.
Sweet Romance known for its sprinting ability and ridden by Kumar Singh decided to change strategy as it literally toyed with its opponents, before surging ahead at the far turn.
With turfites anticipating a close race, the horse showed tremendous turn of speed, before leaving its opponents standing still to take the $250,000 winner’s reward and the Poonai’s Pharmacy Trophy. Top of the Line, Maracas Star and Royal Champion all lost their royalty and was beaten into submission.
World Class of the Vibert and Singh stables is quickly becoming a class act.
It won the highly competitive F class event and the $200,000 prize along with the Fiesta Fish Shop trophy. Ridden by Jockey Krishna Singh it won from Laura lee in Flight, the Gap and Mattarazzi. It was another 1300m gallop.
Zenyatta out of the Jumbo Jet stables produced a storming run down the homestretch to pound the field by about 6 lengths over 1300 metres in the Digicel sponsored two year-old race for Guyana & West Indian bred horses along with the $180,000 top prize.
The outstanding two year-old trained by Sham Chattergoon and ridden by Prem Chandra was tucked neatly behind the leaders for most of the back straights, before being urged on just as they approached the turn for home and tracked leader Stormy Water with Miracle Silver and Miss Bounty also in contention.
As they turned for home, Chandra effortlessly cruised into the lead, leaving a trail of destruction pulling away from Stormy Water, Miss Bounty and Miracle Silver in that order to win handsomely.
In other results: Indian Flag got the day started with an impressive win from Tiny 21, Miss Washington and Lightening McQueen in that order, while Bounty Flyer gave owner V. Pompey something to shout about winning the Division 2 & 3 Class race from Obama, Lenny’s Halo and Silver Kid.
In the final race of the day, Pixie Fire was followed home by Funny Side, Casino Royal and Brown Boy.
Jockey Kumar Singh was later named champion jockey, while total prize monies for the Meeting totalled around $3million.
