Jessica Stephenson underlined her class when she completed the triple gold in the breast stroke events at the just concluded Marlins Swim Club hosted Invitational Meet held in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The 4-day event ended on Sunday last which saw Guyana being represented by three athletes, Stephenson, Niall Roberts and Fabian Binns.
Having already secured the girls 13-14 200m breast on Friday, Stephenson swam in the sprint version – the 50m breast stroke in Saturday and again took the gold medal, whilst at the same time achieving the Carifta ‘A’ time for the event to add to the already attained Carifta ‘A times’ she had previously achieved in both the 200 and 100m of the same event.
Stephenson’s new Personal Best (PB) in the 50m breast is now 36.21 a full 1.5 seconds off her previous log course PB.
The final day saw Stephenson again swimming the breaststroke, this time the 100m, where she copped gold in a new personal best of 1:19.38 knocking a substantial 3 seconds off her PB and achieving the best 100m breast of all the age groups at the Meet.
The talented Stephenson, having recently returned to full training and competition following major shoulder surgery, also managed a commendable 7th in the 200m free.
Fellow Guyanese Niall Roberts swam a good 100m butterfly to finish 5th behind stiff home competition from the many Trinidad and Tobago teams.
Roberts and Fabian Binns competed with 35 swimmers in the 50m free which saw the former touching home in 8th place and Fabian in 16th in extremely close races that saw hundredths of seconds separating swimmers with the swimmers who are accustomed to using the 50m pool having the distinct advantage.
The three Guyanese swimmers said they were all pleased to have taken part and they gained great experience in the fully FINA sanctioned Meet which saw close to 400 swimmers from the region and the USA competing.
