The Brazilian businessman who was shot on Sunday by gunmen at Oku backdam, Bartica, has been transported out of the area and admitted to the Bartica Hospital. He is being treated for gunshot wounds to the left leg. Police said that 41-year-old Ivan Perreira and his wife were in their shop around 13:00 hrs when two men, who were armed with a handgun and a knife attacked them.
The robbers reportedly shot Perreira twice in his left leg after he hesitated when they demanded that he hand over his valuables. His wife was also assaulted.
The men then relieved him of a quantity of raw gold and $200,000 before fleeing.
Ivan Perreira was transported out of the area late Sunday and admitted to the Bartica Hospital.
His wife was also treated at the Bartica Hospital.
Meanwhile, Vernon McKenzie, the general manager who was shot in the shoulder on Friday at 14 Miles, Issano, has been discharged from hospital. However, Kaieteur News understands that he is still to undergo surgery to have the bullet removed.
Mc Kenzie was attacked by masked men who relieved him of over nine ounces of gold worth some $2.2M.
The injured man told Kaieteur News that he had already handed over the gold when the men shot him.
A source said that the camp has been closed since the attack, since the other miners are afraid to work.
One of the workers was with Mc Kenzie when the gunmen attacked but managed to escape. Two others who were some distance away heard the gunshots and came face to face with the gunmen when they ran to the scene.
The robbers placed the miners to lie on the ground but left them unharmed.
