The World Economic Forum (WEF), stated in a new report dated December 11, 2009, that countries that have “permissive” or lenient laws on abortions, show poor reduction rates of maternal mortality.
On the other hand and according to the report, “countries with restrictive abortion laws are often the leaders in reducing maternal mortality.”
The report read that Guyana has allowed abortion “without almost any restriction since 1995.” It stated that “ironically,” one of the main explanations behind the liberalising of Guyana’s law was to enhance the “attainment of safe motherhood” by eliminating deaths and complications associated with unsafe abortions.
Guyana was listed as the country with the highest maternal mortality rate in South America, some 30 times higher than Chile. Chile, “with constitutional protection for the unborn,” was listed as the safest South American country for women to bear children.
An examination and comparison of several countries included in the WEF survey, shows that legal abortion does not mean lower maternal mortality rates.
The report used South Africa and stated that the country has the continent’s most liberal abortion laws and continues to have a high maternal mortality ratio of 400 deaths per 100,000 live births, as compared to Mauritius, another African nation.
Mauritius was described in the report as “a country with some of the continent’s most protective laws for the unborn,” and has the lowest maternal mortality rates in Africa.
