Walton Hall defeated Lima by five wickets to win the final of the Sharief and Shira Memorial twenty/20 cricket competition played recently at Anna Regina Centre ground on the Essequibo Coast.
Walton Hall won the toss and asked Lima to bat first in front of a large and colourful crowd after the game was reduced to 15 overs due to rain. Davo Lall was the only batsman that offered resistance with 24 as Lima were bowled out for 64 in 14.4 overs. Nand Bahadur bagged 4-7 off 4 overs and G. Balgobin 3-8 from 3 overs. Walton Hall then responded with 67-5 in 14.1 overs. Devindra Balgobin top scored with 30 while Vishwanauth Lall supported with 23. Subash Maipaul grabbed 4-13 off 3 overs for runner up Lima who received a trophy and $15,000 for their effort.
Walton Hall took the winning trophy and $25,000 while Devindra Balgobin was adjudged the man of the match. The competition’s best bowler award went to Hemant Kowshal (14 wkts) while Vishwanauth Lall who made 282 runs including a century in the competition received the trophy for the best batsman.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Arif Khan who sponsored the competition on behalf of his parents, said it will be an annual event and thanked the teams for participating.
Sharief and Shira Khan were also the parents of former North Essequibo cricket committee chairman Hakim Khan. (Zaheer Mohamed)
