-“the sufferings of the people have reached the point of intolerance”
“We will be kicking like mules,” said Acting General Secretary of the Guyana Trade Union Congress (GTUC), Norris Witter, as he subtly unravelled plans to address issues that are of concern to the union.
And the union, Witter said, will not move in a misguided manner but rather it will use much thought and wisdom in the strategies it chooses to employ. In fact he noted that the union has sought to incorporate innovative ways of voicing its concerns. “It isn’t by chance that we have been having three or four persons at our picketing exercise. Those actions were deliberate,” Witter told media personnel at a recent press conference.
This move, he said was crucial because it has been observed that dirty tricks are perpetrated by some persons when large number of persons are on the picketing line. He speculated that persons from depressed communities, particularly “poor little black boys”, are recruited to infiltrate demonstrations and “beat up” on persons who are of East Indian descent thus are able to create problems such as racial distrust and disharmony.
“We don’t want to play the game by their rules. When we put people on the streets it will be a multi-racial group and when they least expect it we will have mass demonstration and no three or four junkies within the little army headed by some known persons will be able to turn us back or create mayhem.”
According to Witter, the GTUC has been carefully studying the machinations of some “wicked and demonic” people who are seeking to uncover the strategies being streamlined by the union.
Witter at the press conference also said, “I am suggesting to all the workers of this country that if they want an improvement in the quality of life next year they have to forget about this Christmas. This must be a Christmas when the workers of the country must take to the streets and tell the administration that we are fed up with the poppycock.”
According to Witter, the GTUC has been quiet over the past few weeks but has been carefully analysing and assessing the conditions and the responses of the people. Based on the most recent analysis, he disclosed that “the people are on the move and they will not turn back.”
He said that the Union has been meeting with people across the spectrum, who are ready to bring about a new dawn. The sufferings of the people in this country, he said, have reached the point of intolerance.
“The nurses, the policemen, the soldiers, the teachers…they are all disgusted, they are all at a state of desperation. What they need is leadership and we are prepared to give them leadership,” Witter asserted.
