Less than two years after taking up residence in the United States of America, former Women World International Boxing Association (WIBA) and International Boxing Council (WIBC) light/heavyweight champion, Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil returns to Guyana to engage Lindener Sharon Ward in a fight slated for Sunday, December 27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and dubbed ‘Season’s Beatings.’
The fight, promoted by head of Holland’s Enterprise Promotions, Carwyn Holland is O’Neil’s first for sometime after she suffered her second loss to world-renowned boxer, Laila Ali, daughter of former World Heavyweight champion, Mohammed Ali.
Word is that O’Neil is out to avenge the loss of her gym mate and friend Debbie Tyson, at the hands of Ward when the two fought earlier this year.
The ‘Stealth Bomber’ with a daunting 13-6-1(7 KO’s) record has been involved in several exciting fights, the most notable against American Kathy Rivers, whom she defeated for the WIBA title. She also battled Crystal Lessy, for the WIBC version and came out victorious. O’Neil is currently preparing for a rematch against American Carlette Ewell who defeated her in the second of two fights in St Marten. O’Neil had won the first.
Ward is currently in Russia preparing for the fight and will be back in home three days before hr ring date. Ward has been involved in several slugfests and has proven her worth in previous fights. She is certainly no pushover. She had earlier proven herself when she had registered a come from behind victory over Veronica Blackman on an earlier card at the CASH. In her last fight against Debbie Tyson, Ward had pummeled the Georgetown fighter, convincingly winning a unanimous verdict. She has since vowed to beat O’Neil, stating that she is not afraid of the former world champion.
Meanwhile, local heavyweight champion, Mitchell Rogers will oppose former Gym mate Anthony Augustine in a bout dubbed ‘the Battle of the Breweries’ since both men work for beverage companies; Augustine for the Demerara Distillers Limited and Mitchell for Banks DIH Ltd.
Rogers has been yearning for action ever since he knocked out Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes to lift the local heavyweight crown but no one wanted to take him on. Cloyd Williams eventually gathered enough courage to face Mitchell but the local heavyweight king, who is also the runner-up bodybuilding champion, disposed of him inside three rounds.
Carwyn Holland manages Rogers and feels his charge has what it takes to become a world champion. “My plan is to give Guyana its first heavyweight world champion and I strongly believe if Rogers can add a little more speed and upper body movement to compliment his immense punching power, he will surely do well against the Klitschko brothers (Vladimir and Vitali),” Holland pronounced.
He further boasted that Rogers could take as well as give a punch. He further intimated that after his charge would have had a few fights he could challenge overseas based Guyanese Andre “Stone” Palette or former world champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite.
‘Season’s Beatings’ will also see Trinidadian based “Pure Gold” Iwan Azore returning to Guyana to face the Laurex Benn in a Junior Middleweight match-up while Dexter Marques will tackle Shawn Pile.
Pile recently returned to the scene with a bang and disposed of Paul Lewis inside one round on the last card promoted by S&S Promotions. The night’s proceedings begin with debutant Clive Atwell taking on Errol Trotman.
Holland further intimated that the card would also serve as an appreciation forum for all sponsors and persons who have contributed to H.E. Promotions during 2009. He also said that media operatives from several entities in the USA would attend the card to report on the results. Among them is Mr. Joel Millman of the Wall Street Journal.
