A pugnacious 112 from left-hander Wasim Haslim led hosts GCC to first innings points against Transport Sports Club (TSC), while Krishna Arjune’s magnificent 185 has put GNIC in a strong position to take first innings points from Everest at Everest on the second day the 3rd round of the Demerara zone of the National 3-day first division cricket competition.
A useful all-round performance from former Guyana 20/20 player Orin Ford (2-7 & 55) has kept Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) in the hunt for first innings points against DCC at MSC in the other game in the competition played in Georgetown yesterday.
At Bourda rain prevented an early start and when play resumed after lunch TSC on 79-4 overnight, fell for 168 although Devaughn Nandan hit a robust unbeaten 38.
By the close, GCC had scored 212-2 in one session to take first innings points on the slow outfield with First-Class left-handers Vishal Singh (75) and his Skipper Leon Johnson (15) at the crease going into today’s final day.
Nanadan hit leg-spinner Ricardo Jadunauth for consecutive straight sixes after lofting left-arm spinner Raj Nanan for a 4 and a 6 over long-off but got little support and ran out of partners as off-spinner Gavin Singh (3-7) polished off the TSC tail. Pacer Chindanand Shivram (3-46) and Nanan (2-45) had done the early damage.
Chandra Persaud (29), Kevin Alphonso (28), Simon Sam (24) and Stephen Alves (21) all failed to build on good starts for TSC.
Yogesh Kissoon gave the visitors the perfect start when GCC began their reply as Jadunauth was trapped lbw for a duck.
However, Haslim, who scored the majority of his runs with whips through mid-wicket and wristy flicks behind square, dispatched anything loose while Singh pushed his case for a National re-call by playing the supporting role in the 174-run 2nd wicket stand. Haslim then lofted a catch to long-off shortly after posting his 3rd ton in 3-day first division cricket to leave the score on 184-2.
Singh soon reached his fifty and will hope that the weather is kind to him today to allow him the opportunity of getting the 25 more he requires for a century while the out-of-form but hugely talented Johnson will also want to get some runs under his belt and build a substantial lead for GCC to force a win on the final day.
At MSC, DCC resumed on 142-2 and fell for 280 with National Keeper Derwin Christian making 53, Chris Barnwell 41, Jamal Hinckson 40, Deonauth Baksh 38 and Denver Greaves 32 contributing for DCC.
Daniels, a National under-19 pacer, took 4-43 while Berbice born Demerara left-arm spinner Damien Vantull (3-58) and off-spinner Forde (2-7) bowled well for MSC who reached 114-4 by the close.
Forde made 55 while Danny Narayan remained unbeaten on 45. Utom Munroe has so far picked up 2-18 for DCC.
At Everest, the home team were 61-2 at the end of the penultimate day replying to GNIC’s 355 with Abilash Dookie (37*) and Chanderpaul Hemraj (21*) being the not out batsmen.
Arjune resumed on 133 and fell 15 short of his double century as leg-spinner Rakesh Goberdhan took 3-57 and Dookie 2-19 for the Camp road side. (Sean Devers)
