Zafeer Haniff scored a blistering century (104) decorated with 9 sixes and 3 fours to lead Annandale West XI to a resounding victory over Gopaul Mandir XI when play in the Carib Beer National Softball Cricket Tournament, organized by Guyana Softball League in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, continued last weekend at several venues countrywide.
Gopaul Mandir X1 elected to take first strike after winning the toss and amassed 179-7 in 15 overs. Salim Singh (78) lashed a half century to take the batting honours for his team. In reply Annandale West XI knocked off the required total (183-5) in 14.3 overs. Rishi Samaroo (38) was the best batsman for the winners.
Annandale West returned later in the day to thrash Uprising XI, also in their second match, by a massive 136 runs.
The eventual winner’s batted first and scored 193-7 in 15 overs with Martin Hukum scoring 55 runs decorated with 6 fours. In reply Uprising XI were bundled out for 56 in 11 overs after Rishi Samaroo took 5-20 from 3 overs with support from Shazam Ali (4-20 from 3 overs).
The action continued with Desperado XI, playing their first match of the tournament, defeating Keshan XI by 7 wickets. Keshan XI were inserted after calling incorrectly and amassed 185 –6 in 15 overs. Vishwanauth Jeewan scored an even half century (4×6) to take the batting honours. His efforts proved to be insufficient as Desperado XI, led by an unbeaten century from Ajay Persaud (4×6; 3×4), carted off the honours.
Desperado XI were not so fortunate in their second match of the day, losing to Mike’s Copy Centre by 34 runs in a high scoring affair. Mike’s Copy Centre batted first and scored 230-6 in 15 overs. Top scorer was Murphy Ramnauth (67). In reply Desperado XI fell woefully short of the target, scoring 196 all out in 13.5 overs. Sunil Boodram (109) was their best batsman. Mike’s Copy Centre then gained a walkover from Hot Steppers to register their second victory for the day.
In matches played in the West Coast Zone at the Leonora Primary School Ground, Uitvlugt Youths XI started on a winning note by thrashing Rangers Youths XI by 130 runs. Uitvlugt Youths XI won the toss and batted first scoring 160 all out in 14.4 overs. In reply Rangers Youths XI made 56 all out in 4.5 overs. Zeeburg Youths continued their winning ways by defeating Leonora Youths “B” Team by 86 runs after the winners posted a total of 130 in 14.5 overs. Leonora Youths “B” team failed to eclipse the total, faltering at 44 all out in 6.1 overs.
Matches continued in the Essequibo zone, at the Reliance Ground when Reliance Warriors retained their unbeaten status with an 8 wicket victory over Golden Fleece.
Golden Fleece won the toss and batted scoring 155-7 in 15 overs. In reply Reliance Warriors CC knocked off the required total in 12.3 overs. Reliance Sports XI then defeated Rebel United by 10 runs. Later in the evening, under floodlights at the Affiance Ground, Essequibo, former countrywide champions Die Hard XI continued their unbeaten streak after destroying Young Rivals by 75 runs.
In other matches, Affiance CC “A” Team defeated Jaguars XI by 5 wickets while at the Suddie Ground, Essequibo, United brothers XI defeated Affiance “B” Team by 9 wickets. Cullen CC then won by a walkover to El Dorado SC, while in the Linden Zone at the Christianburg Ground, Blue Berry Hill United Defeated Uprising SC by 6wickets.
The other matches were aborted due to the inclement weather. The competition continues today with several matches.
