The Port Mourant Turf club (PMTC) situated at Port Mourant on the Corentyne Coast will today be the centre of attraction in the horseracing circle. The occasion will be the grand one day seven-event Pre Christmas meet.
Most of the top horses in the country have taken entry for the big showdown. When entries closed on Sunday last, some 60 horses had already registered in what is expected to be a classical event.
The club recently undertook massive rehabilitation works to its track, which is in excellent shape, and the grand stand has also been refurbished.
The sponsorship money has been upped to over a whopping $3M with jockeys, owners and patrons all expected to cash in on some massive giveaways which the organisers have arrange for the big day.
Seven races are listed to be contested on the days programme with four feature events.
The event for Horses classified B and lower, the 3 years old open, the F class gallops and the 2yr old match up are the top notch events.
The Feature B class and Lower race over a distance of 1650M is being sponsored by Beverage Giants Banks DIH Limited and has a whopping $400,000 as the winners take and the Banks DIH trophy.
The 3-yrs-old open showdown sponsored by Republic Bank Guyana Limited over Six and a half furlongs for animals Bred and Born in Guyana and the West Indies will see the
Horses competing for the $250,000 top prize and the Republic Bank trophy.
The highly competitive F and Lower event which is being sponsored by Neal and Massy Guyana limited will run over 1400m with the champion receiving $200,000 and the Neal and Massey trophy.
The Two-year-old encounter is also for Horses Bred and Born in Guyana and the West Indies and sees sponsorship from Telecommunication powerhouse Digicel Guyana Limited. The race is another six Furlongs contest with the winner galloping off with the $180,000 first prize and the Digicel trophy.
The ‘I’ class contest will see the winner taking away the $120,000 first prize in the Seven Furlong race and is sponsored by the Port Mourant Turf Club.
Horses competing in the ‘I’ 3 maidens 3-year-old open over six Furlongs with a first prize of $110,000 will also get their winnings compliments of the club.
The division 2&3 race is being sponsored by overseas based Guyanese eating house Ranth Restaurant and Bar of Queens, New York with the winner collecting $100,000 with the distance being a six furlong encounter.
The individual prizes have being sponsored by businessman Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall in Bourda Market. The accolades will go to the champion jockey, champion trainer and champion stables among others.
The day’s activity will be conducted under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA).
Race time is 13.00 hrs. Music will be supplied by the internationally famed Rhythm Stars International Sound System.
