Relatives seek answers on inmate’s death at Timehri Prison

On her first visit to Guyana, the country where her father was born, Latisha Eastman never expected it would be to bury her dad. And the circumstances surrounding his death are less than clear.
Ms. Eastman said she was informed by other relatives that her father, 62-year-old Ian Eastman, died on November 28, while at the Timehri Prison. What was most alarming to relatives was the fact that the post mortem was only done on December 4.
The dead man’s sister, Yvonne Eastman, said when she learnt of her brother’s death she went to the Georgetown Hospital’s mortuary. While there, the woman said a worker opened the refrigerator in the mortuary and she was shocked at the sight of her sibling’s remains.
“He was bloated, his eyes were bulging out of his head, and his body was rotting already. What I want to know if he died and he was in a fridge how he started to decay so fast?” the man’s sister questioned.
Latisha Eastman said that to date she has not been told of the circumstances surrounding her father’s death. According to the young woman, the post mortem result, which was seen by this newspaper, revealed that her father died as a result of cardinal blunt trauma. She said “through the grapevine” she was told that her father may have died days before the Prison officials reported that he died.
“When I saw his body it was in an advanced stage of decomposition, we had to do a closed casket funeral, his face was bashed in and there were bruises about his body; bruises, consistent with a severe beating,” Ms. Eastman said.
She added that even when she went to claim her father’s remains, the workers at the parlour were astonished over the state of decomposition.
Meanwhile, when contacted Director of Prisons Dale Erskine said he is not aware of the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. He noted that he was informed that there was a death at the Timehri facility. The Director assured that an investigation would be launched.
