Fistic fury anticipated as amateur boxers battle
The country’s top amateur boxers are scheduled to match skills when the monthly Inter-Gym Boxing tournament continues at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), this Sunday, December 13.
The tournament was conceptualized by several concerned boxing coaches and gym representatives and was staged at least once every six weeks.
The coaches felt that the boxers were not involved in getting enough fights and decided that this tournament would have provided much needed activity for them.
The tournament started at the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym and was so well attended that the organizers decided to regularize activities to a once per month affair. Since then there has been several other cards at the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym with interchanges at the Forgotten Youth Foundation. This week marks the first time at the ALBG.
Indeed, the action packed encounters witnessed at the card endorsed the organizers’ view that with constant activities the boxers would have shown the kind of improvement necessary for international engagements.
The recent installment of Steve Ninvalle to the helm of GABA has seen a reenergized effort by the organizers to provide constant activity for amateur pugilists. The card on Sunday promises to be just as action packed as the ones preceding it. Boxers will be weighed on the morning of the fight and the action gets underway at around 11:00hrs after the boxers are matched against their respective opponents. Several business enterprises have already acquiesced to sponsor the programme and the boxers would be competing for lucrative prizes.
The organizers have also hinted that plans are in train to make the card bigger and better since new initiatives are being contemplated in this direction.
Boxers participating on this weekend’s card are asked to assemble at the ALBG by 09:00hrs to facilitate the weigh in process. Activities are scheduled to commence at 11:00hrs sharp. Admission is free.
