A businessman and his Middle Road La Penitence family were arrested on Tuesday following the discovery of two unlicensed firearm and ten rounds of ammunition in their home.
According to reports, about 17:00hrs on Tuesday the police while conducting searches on various houses to recover a quantity of stolen Digicel phone cards, made the discovery in the kitchen in a bag. No one claimed ownership and four persons including the businessman; his wife and two teenaged daughters were arrested.
The phone cards were stolen from another businessman residing in the vicinity of the East Ruimveldt Front Road. The unlicensed weapons were a Berretta pistol with five matching rounds and a semiautomatic pistol with five rounds.
The girls aged 13 and 15 were subsequently released to attend school but up to yesterday the parents were still in custody pending charges for possession of two unlicensed firearms and possession of ammunition.
The phone cards were not recovered and reports are that attempts were made to bribe the three ranks.
