School children right across Guyana would vie for honours when the Guyana Chess Federation stages the National Schools Championship at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, starting this Saturday.
This tournament had been dormant for sometime until last year when, through the efforts of the Chess Federation and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the championships were resuscitated. Students from the Marian Academy had excelled at the Intermediate level, carting off that title while the Stewartville Secondary School won the Beginners trophy.
This year administrators have changed the format somewhat and students would now compete for individual ad well as team titles.
According to the organizers, the tournament will be played according to the Swiss system, over eight rounds and a time control of one and one half hours is allotted per game.
To date several schools have responded to invitations dispatched by the Guyana Chess Federation, indicating at interest in participating. They include the St. Stanislaus College, Bishop High School, Bartica Secondary School, the President’s College, Marian Academy, Diamond Secondary, Mackenzie High School, West Demerara Secondary and Rosignol Secondary School.
Each school is allowed two teams of four players each for the team category and two players for the individual category.
Interested Schools are asked to register with Tournament Director Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650 by Friday December 11. The tournament is exclusively sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. The first pawn will be moved at 09:30hrs.
