When Guyana Power and Light commissioned its new Kingston power plant, the management was full of raise for the anticipated end to blackouts.
However, what the management did not say was that one of the three new engines was out of operation.
Instead of generating some 21 megawatts, the Kingston power plant was only generating 14 megawatts. Chief Executive Officer, Bharat Dindyal, a few weeks earlier, had announced that there was surplus power in the system.
He said that the three Kingston power station and the other Wartsila units operating out of Garden of Eden were generating eight megawatts more than the demand.
However, soon after, there was a spate of blackout. GPL explained that the Kingston power plant was undergoing filter changes in keeping with the operational manual and that within two days everything would be back to full operation.
However, soon after the number two generator developed a problem that requires the importation of the damaged component.
This is the reason for the continued blackouts, one worker said.
Government spent US$27 million on the three new generators. It is being called on to spend more even before they are fully operational.
