– shotgun, 23 containers with dieseline found in car
Police recovered a shotgun and several containers of dieseline after exchanging gunfire with suspected fuel thieves at Madewini around 04:30 hrs yesterday.
The items were recovered from a car, PFF 2757, that the thieves abandoned after the brief shootout.
Kaieteur News understands that the vehicle belongs to the father of an army rank who lives at Timehri.
The rank was detained but then released after he turned up at a police station to report that the vehicle had been stolen some time Saturday night.
Police said that 23 plastic containers with dieseline, a 12 gauge shotgun with four cartridges, a pair of gloves and a camouflage hat and poncho were found in the vehicle.
Police stated in a release that ranks of a mobile police patrol were near Madewini when they saw what appeared to be fuel leaking from the trunk of motor car PFF 1757 that was traveling in front of them. There were three men inside.
“The police followed the vehicle which suddenly stopped and one of the men exited the vehicle and opened fire with a handgun on the police ranks. The ranks took cover and returned fire. However, the men managed to escape.”
The car was then impounded.
