After being given approval to host the XXI Central & American Games 2010 Rugby Sevens Tournament by Central American and Caribbean Sports Organisation (CASCO) Representatives Keith Joseph and Professor Luis Padavoni, one would have thought that every positive result gained by the rugby fraternity was going to earn the recognition and support it richly deserved, especially from those with the authority to do so.
The Guyana Men’s and Women’s squads recently retained their respective regional titles with the former also qualifying to represent this nation at the upcoming IRB World Sevens Series in Las Vegas next February and if those are not significant achievements for our sports teams to be publicly acknowledged and congratulated then what is.
Instead, the total opposite occurred, it has been frowned upon by the same Ministry that promised to do so much to get the local Body prepared to host the tournament next year.
Dr. Anthony speaking on behalf of his Ministry and Government at the National Stadium shortly after the visiting team inspected the proposed venue said that they were pleased to be partnered with the Union and the GOA, adding that during the preliminary discussion which was held with the two parties, it was readily agreed that they would like to see a variety of sports being played at the Stadium.
“I’m assured by the technical team who after looking at the dimensions of the facility stated that they are confident that we could host Games of that magnitude,” Dr. Anthony expressed.
He said that from their end, the confidence of successfully staging such a tournament is extremely high given the amount of experience and expertise that they’ve garnered from hosting events of similar and an even bigger scale in the past.
“I’m very optimistic and the Organisers can be assured that they have the support of my Ministry and the Government by extension.”
“As you’ve heard Mr. Nascimento say, rugby is now part of the Olympic Movement so this tournament will be historic and that we are pleased with,” the Minister pointed out.
He added that hosting the tournament will also help to lift the popularity of the sport.
After hearing such affirmative comments, it is now surprising that since the two teams returned, it must be noted that no congratulatory message has emanated publicly from any section of the Ministry of Sport and this is a bad signal to our athletes who make huge sacrifices to keep the Golden Arrowhead flying proudly wherever they compete and Mexico was one such location.
The question therefore was there a partisan approach by the Ministry and if so why.
