Administrators of the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) have voted unanimously to dedicate the newly constructed grand stand to the memory of Deo Kharag, a former President of the Club from 1955-1976 when he migrated to the USA.
A release from the KMTC credits Kharag with several developmental initiatives of the club including the expansion of the track. “During his Presidency the club grew from being a small track to one of the leading facilities in the country,” the release said.
Most of Kharag’s relatives reside in the USA but are scheduled to return for the momentous occasion scheduled for Monday December 14 at 14:00hrs at the Club’s race tracks. One of Kharag’s sons, Ron who is the proprietor of Metro, will also attend the ceremony.
Meanwhile, the Kharag family has acquiesced to sponsor the feature event at the Club’s race meet scheduled for Boxing Day at the Club’s Bush Lot Farm Corentyne headquarters. This race is for horses classified ‘C’ and Lower over a distance of one mile. The winner receives one million dollars and the Deo Kharag Memorial trophy while the second place finisher receives half that amount. Third and fourth finishers receive $250,000 and $125,000 respectively.
Among some of the horses scheduled to compete in this event are the Message, Great Memories, Jumbo Joy, Sweet Carmel, Sequin, Annie’s Playmate, Irish Gel, Miss Republic, Lil Pinch the Cash, Miss Orientate and Matera 21. Otherwise, a great day of competitive horse racing is anticipated.
