Trinidad and Tobago’s Malvern Hockey Club had dominant performances with both their male and female teams against GCC in the main duels when the Diamond Mineral Water International Hockey Festival continued yesterday.
Malvern’s female team won 4-3 against GCC with Landri Fourie and Penny Stephens the goal scorers with a double each. Sonia Jardine scored twice for the defending champions, GCC while Kerensa Fernandes added the other goal.
Malvern’s male team then took the upper hand with a 5-4 victory against GCC in an intense battle. Malvern had also won against Old Fort the previous day. The triumph yesterday made them the only unbeaten team.
Trinidad and Tobago’s national sensation, Wayne Legerton opened the scoring for them in the fifth minute when he flicked a rebound to score a penalty corner that had beaten the advancing keeper in the centre of GCC’s box.
The gruelling and aggressive match-ups persisted until Legerton gave a sublime pass to a cutting Joshua DeFour for the team’s second goal in the 13th minute.
Malvern arrested the advantage early in the game against the opposition.
The fighting characteristic of GCC got returns when Orland Semple finished an acrobatic field goal in the 18th minute of the first half to put his team on the scorecard.
The visitors went into halftime precariously placed leading 2-1.
Three minutes into the second half, Malvern continued their prolific scoring when Warren Jonathan received an acute pass from centre court and completed the field goal. Malvern went up 3-1 as GCC went back to the drawing boards.
Almost ten minutes of aggressive hockey ensued before Malvern took a 4-1 advantage in the 32nd minute when DeFour scored his second goal. GCC were yet again forced to play from behind, as they had done many times before.
The final eight minutes of the game produced some scintillating hockey as the home team searched for at least an equalisation. The time almost replicated that when Dwayne Scott got things on the way with a 34th minute penalty stroke.
It was not long after that Devin Hooper sent a rocket-like penalty corner into the back of the nets in the 39th minute to give the game an interesting twist.
From being down 4-1 the game was now poised with GCC trailing by only one.
However, hope dwindled when Malvern’s hero, Legerton got a beautifully placed cross at the left flank that he made no mistake with finishing.
Malvern went up 5-3, though Kevin Spencer added consolation for GCC with a 40th minute strike.
In the veterans’ competition, Trinidad and Tobago’s defending Diamond Mineral Water champions, Fatima defeated Old Fort 5-3 with Paul Pantin scoring thrice.
David Nieves and Gerrard Vieira added the other goals for them.
Old Forte’s Dexter Wyles, Dwayne Alleyne and Roger Daniel were the principle scorers for team in the game. Meanwhile, Hikers defeated Malvern 1-0 with Sean Boodlall on the score sheets in the Veterans’ encounter Friday night.
