A fine allround performance by former Essequibo U-19 player Kevin Gordon guided Young Warriors to a nine wicket victory over Satro in the final of the Leguan Cricket Committee Twenty/20 competition played last Sunday at Whyte’s Park.
Satro batted first and scored 88 all out in 17 overs with Fazil Khan and Zaheer Razack being their main run scorers with 17 and 15 respectively. Gordon, a medium pacer, bagged 4-14 while Cleveland Carter took 2-9.
Young Warriors responded with 98-1 in 11 overs. Gordon returned to top score with 43 while Omesh Jattan supported with 29. Naieem Habeeb was the lone wicket taker for Satro who took the runner up prize of $5,000, while Young Warriors collected $10,000 for their effort. Man of the match Gordon who stroked a century in the competition also received the award for the best batsman. Naieem Habeeb was the tournament’s best bowler.
Chairman of the Leguan Cricket Committee Sheikh Fazal congratulated the winning team and encouraged the players to take the game seriously.
Meanwhile, in the lone semi-final played in the three team competition of which Satro drew the bye to final, Young Warriors defeated Rebel by four wickets.
Scores: Rebel 93 all out in 18 overs. (Johnny Singh 29, Ravi Boodoo 3-27) lost to Young Warriors 97-6 in 17 overs. (Steve Persaud 39, Jai Nandram 3-41).
