As PEPFAR deepens its engagements with partners, the US has committed to continuing to support efforts to make systems more responsive to people living with HIV.
Reaffirming the US Government’s commitment to its partners, US Charge’ d’ Affaires Karen Williams on Wednesday said that these include support systems such as the local ‘Celebrate life poster competition’.

The two had placed second and third respectively in the local contest that was judged on Monday July 13.
Williams also announced that their drawings are now in the global spotlight and their posters are on display at the National Library.
“We must never forget the supporting element of spreading the word through children’s initiatives such as the poster competition as an educational element of bringing our children into these activities.” Williams noted too that teaching the children at an early age through these activities make them aware and better equipped to become active stakeholders in forming a solution to the world’s HIV/AIDS problem.
The two young ladies and other students from several schools, on Wednesday were awarded certificates and book hampers for their sterling efforts in the local competition staged between April and June in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth Challenge Guyana and Peace Corps. Mariea Harrinarine and Athaliah Lambert were subsequent winners in Global Poster Competition and their posters are included in the Global Exhibition.
US Charge’ d’ Affaires Karen Williams distributed the prizes and reaffirmed her Government’s commitment to assisting in the global fight against the scourge of HIV and AIDS.
Chief-Education Officer (ag) Genevieve Whyte-Nedd and members of the PEPFAR Team- Center for Diseases Control, Peace Corps, and teachers from the various schools and students were also present.
Joseph Eastman, PEPFAR’s Co-ordinator, one day after Guyana joined the world in observing World AIDS Day 2009 to commemorate the millions around the world and the thousands of Guyanese affected and infected by HIV, encouraged Guyanese to continue to will themselves to working even harder to reduce the number of new infections and promote positive changes in their communities.
He told the awardees that their work of art truly demonstrate that youths can make a difference in their communities.
Eastman said that the pieces submitted represent the diverse nature of the participants and how they would like to celebrate life.
The posters are on display at the National Library until Saturday.
