“Race walking is a very important leisure activity and continues to make an impact on the local sports fraternity.” Coordinator of the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC), Olga Harry recently made this observation even as she bemoaned the paucity of adequate sponsorship for the sport. Subsequently, Ms. Harry is appealing to corporate Guyana to support the activities of local race walkers.
The CSTC coordinator made this call shortly after junior race walker, Ivelaw Charles, turned in an exceptional performance to cop the 10K Junior Race Walk around Soesdyke on Sunday November 29 last. The activity, which was staged in commemoration of World AIDS Day 2009, also witnessed Ravendra Singh walking in second with his younger sibling, Kenrick in tow.
Angela Charles walked away with the honours in the girl’s category, steps ahead of Shaneeza Lloyd and Cassie Hope, in second and third positions, respectively.
The winners received trophies and medals donated by Modern Optical Service.
Meanwhile, the cream of the country’s race walkers will engage in fierce competition in the ‘Last Lap International Race Walk’ scheduled for December 13.
This event would attract participation from leading walkers in the Caribbean, vying for top spots among their local counterparts.
Activities get underway at 06:30hrs at the Supply Primary School, EBD and proceed along the East Bank thoroughfare up to the Soesdyke Methodist Church where the race culminates.
Spectators would have an opportunity to witness National Race Walk champion, Rudolph Mitchell as he presses on, months after chalking up his 100th victory on the trot. He will have to be wary of Jonathon Fagundes, a young and enthusiastic walker with ambitions of disrupting his winning streak.
The word on the streets is that Fagundes has heightened preparations in anticipation of a tough battle forcing Mitchell to intensify his activities.
Once again the input of corporate Guyana is being sought as well as persons desirous of contributing to the race. These individuals and entities are asked to contact Ms Harry at 222 Back Road Soesdyke.
Contributions may also be deposited at the Citizen Bank, Camp and Charlotte Street at account # 218331151. Already, Lecturer of the University of the West Indies, Dr. Mark Kirton has donated two trophies towards the event. CSTC administrators are soliciting the input of other corporate persons/entities.
