Ogle U-17 put up a sterling performance to upset their U-19 Village team by three wickets when the National Softball Cricket tournament, organized by Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, in collaboration with the Guyana Softball League, continued over the past weekend at various venues countrywide.
The U-19 side won the toss and elected to bat, scoring a challenging 168-4 in 15 overs. Shabbier Mohamed hit 48 (4×6) to take the batting honours while Ishwar Gobin (3-20 from 3 overs) was the best bowler for the eventual winners. In reply Ogle U-17, led by a swashbuckling knock of 106 from Kevin Seeram (9×6; 7×4), cantered to 172-7 in 12.2 overs.
In the next match Hitters XI defeated Gopaul Mandir XI by 25 runs. The former team won the toss and batted first scoring 186-4 in 15 overs. Jeff Ramnauth scored 69 decorated with four sixes and a pair of fours to capture the batting honours. Owennauth Khemraj (2-22 from 3 overs) then restricted Gopaul Mandir XI to 161 all out.
Hitters XI returned later in the day to record their second victory against Uprising XI by 21 runs.
Meanwhile, Harry XI continued their winning ways, defeating Keshan XI by 6 wickets after the eventual losers were inserted, compiling 123 – 9 in 15 overs. Bobby Chan then clobbered an immaculate half century (2×6; 3×4) to secure victory for his team in 12.4 overs.
Ogle Under-19, also in their second match, decisively defeated Better Hope U-19 by 94 runs. Ogle U-19 batted first and scored 171-5 in 15 overs, on the back of a resounding half century from Adrian Persaud (62). In reply Better Hope U-19 were bundled out for 77 in 10.5 due to incisive bowling from Delon Seecharran (4-9 from 3 overs).
In matches played in the East Bank Zone at the Providence Ground, Renegade XI started the tournament on a winning note, defeating Speed Boat XI by 5 wickets. Street Boys XI then secured a walkover after Fledging XI failed to turn up. Renegade XI returned later in the day to defeat previously unbeaten Street Boys XI by 42 runs.
Other results are: Speed Boat (in their second match) won by walkover from Fledging XI in Georgetown while in the Essequibo zone, Reliance Warriors, enjoying a home advantage, defeated Affiance CC “B” by 6 wickets.
In matches played at the Airy Hall Ground, former countrywide champions Die Hard XI destroyed Rebels United by 75 runs while at the Affiance Ground, also on the Essequibo Coast, Affiance CC ‘A’ Team defeated Airy Hall CC ‘A’ by 61 runs. Matches were also played at the Pomona Ground where Pomona Scheme made the most of a home advantage to defeat Cullen CC by 16 runs.
Young Rivals also registered a win, defeating Jaguar XI by 21 runs. In West Coast Zone matches, Uitvlugt XI defeated Zeeburg Youths by 5 wickets, while Uitvlugt ‘B’ XI got a walkover from Ruimzeight XI. Shattaville XI then defeated Young Challengers by 8 wickets.
