Three-time champions Hikers are confident of retaining the Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Tournament which started yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
According to Captain Devin Munroe, the team which is the only local club to reach the finals of the tournament, winning it thrice and being runner-up once had some encouraging sessions during preparations for this year’s competition both at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and St. Stanislaus College and though the turnout was average, the confidence and optimism among players was high.
“The regular hard workers of the team were consistent at practice and went through their set plays and short corners with clinical efficiency.
The spectators will definitely get their monies worth when they come out for the Hikers matches. The team is expected to play at a high tempo and with their combination of skill should out match their opponents,” Munroe felt,
The squad is a combination of some of the older players like Rene Edwards and Timothy McIntosh and youth players Shaquelle Assanah and Akeem Thompson. The back bone of the team will be the usual running combination of Jerazeno “skill-axe” Bell, Munroe (Captain), Alex Gouveia, Robert France an Robert Fernandes.
Goalkeeper Azad DeAbreu is expected to be in fine form after his outstanding performance at the last GT&T national indoor.
Hikers’ men will definitely be coming out strong to retain their title and they have been more motivated since their recent loss to GCC in the just concluded national indoor tournament in which they were undefeated until the final.
“We owe this one to our sponsors and supporters who’ve been with us throughout the year. The generous support from Demerara Distillers Limited, Global Technology and Scotia Bank continues to contribute to the development of Hikers Hockey,” Munroe disclosed.
