From all indication there has been a reduction in the number of pregnancies occurring among the recipients of Cuban Scholarship.
This is according to Minister of Public Service Jennifer Westford, who was at the time responding to questions from members of the media.
Westford said so far for this year there has been no reported case of any student in Cuba being pregnant, but her Ministry remains vigilant since the year has not yet ended.
For last year there were three pregnancies and the previous year they were five cases. As such Minister Westford is urging the parents of the students to play a more vital role in their children’s lives.
“When you call your children talk to them, we cannot and we will not tell them not to have sex what we will do is urge them to use condoms,” Westford stressed.
She further noted that once a pregnancy is reported that student will no longer be allowed to continue the scholarship programme.
“We do not send children on this scholarship, we send adults and we would expect them to be responsible,” Minister Westford stressed.
She added that it is very alarming that in this day and age when HIV/AIDS is so rampant persons would still want to have unprotected sex.
The Minister added that it is her hope that given the fact that the figures are currently down it will stay that way.
She added that from the all of the reports they have received from this last batch of scholarship recipients it seems as if the Ministry has gotten over the message about pregnancy and the scholarship programme.
“The students need to remember that these programmes are funded by tax payers’ monies and as such they should make full use of the opportunities given to them”.
