-King, Singh get the nod to move sport forward
By Edison Jefford
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has appointed two new Cricket Development Officers following the resignation of Colin Stuart from the post in a move that is geared at dealing aggressively with the many problems in the sport.
The Cricket Board debriefed the media yesterday on the appointment of former Guyanese and West Indies fast bowler, Reon King and Caribbean High Performance Analyst, Robin Singh to the posts of Cricket Development Officers.
“The reason why we have employed two people is for them to come up with programmes that will help us develop local cricket,” GCB President, Chetram Singh informed before a well attended press conference at the GCC, Bourda.
Singh said that the current situation of local cricket may require more than two officers in that developmental capacity, but the GCB can only afford two of them at the moment. He said that they have not ruled out a need for more officers.
Public Relations Officer of the GCB, Terry Holder, made it clear that the local board will not pass the buck on its responsibility toward the development of local cricket. It is amid that context that the GCB hired King and Singh.
“We feel responsible for our disappointing performances. We see no reason why the team that we have equipped cannot come back with results, so we sat down and try to come up with what we can do,” Holder told members of the media.
“We have had too much underdevelopment in Guyana, so what we tried to do (with those two appointments) is to eradicate that,” the GCB PR man continued, before introducing a very articulate King and Singh to make comments.
King, who played 19 Test Matches and 50 One Day Internationals for West Indies, stated that it is a privilege and honour to be appointed to such an important role in Guyana with the view of developing a competitive regional team.
“Our vision is to move Guyana’s cricket from where it is currently. We will not be taking our young talents for granted.
We will be looking a holistic approach that also deals with pitches, umpiring and so on,” King indicated yesterday.
He acknowledged that there is quite a lot of work to be done but noted that he will call on the services of the five coaches, who the GCB employs, for support. King said, he and the High Performance Analyst, Singh cannot do it alone.
Singh reiterated King’s point that more support is needed but informed that the country is now on par with many others including cricket’s superpower, Australia in the use of Data related to scientific methods in analysing the game.
“We can now produce quality work based on scientific method. We have moved on from just video analysis to notation analysis where we can review types of shots in the all those different frames that the software provides,” Singh said.
Singh has worked with the Stanford Superstars Twenty/20 team; Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and West Indies First Class team as a High Performance Analyst. He will bring those exposures to bear on his new local post.
