Defending champions Hikers (Men) and GCC (Ladies) got off to impressive starts as play in this year’s Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival commenced yesterday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Hikers Men crushed a hapless Western Dragons 15-1 with star player Jerazeno Bell (5, 20, 27 and 32) lashing in four goals, while Robert France (6, 28 and 29), Shane Samuels (15, 35 and 36), Alex Gouveia (2 and 26), Devin Munroe (8 and 23) and Richard Matthias (38) supported admirably. Deon Beresford (15) scored the lone goal for the Dragons.
GCC Ladies then had to come from behind to defeat a determined Hikers 3-1 with Brenette Gordon (30), Kerensa Fernandes (36) and Tricia Fiedtkou (40), being the goal-scorers. Marisha Rodrigues made the lone response for the youthful Hikers unit.
Also displaying commanding form was Old Fort, who thrashed Barbados’ YMCA 10-2. Canada-based Jonathan Roberts (9, 16, 26 and 39) proved too skilful for the Bajans, while Jason DeSantos (25 and 29), Aderemi Simon (6 and19), Trinidadians Aidan DeGannes (8) and Nicholas Wren (23), also added their names on the score-sheet.
In the opening game of the tournament, Hikers veterans beat a short-handed GCC 3-1.
Timothy Jonas (19), Sheldon Corlette (37) and Timothy McIntosh (38) were the men on target.
Three more matches were scheduled for the night with Old Fort taking on GCC in a veterans match-up, YMCA versus Hikers (Men) and GCC vs. Old Fort (Men).
Fifteen more matches are planned for today, commencing from 09:00 hrs.
