As the first day of the Christmas month dawned six businesses at the Vreed en Hoop stelling, West Coast Demerara, were robbed yesterday. These stalls, the Paint Palace, Orion Technology, Designer Cut Barber Shop, Inner Circle, Esther’s Jewelry and Rohan’s Jewelry, are located in the vicinity of the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station
According to Kishore Bodeo, the proprietor of Paint Palace, one of his workers received a phone call very early in the morning from a stall holder stating that his business was broken into because the locks were not on the front doors.
He further said that he lives miles away from his business that supplies a variety of paints. This would be the second time his business was robbed. Earlier this year, in March, he lost $1.5M. His security guard was found tied up and beaten and no one wanted to work again. Yesterday he claimed to have lost $1.3M in valuables.
The owner of Rohan’s Jewelry said that the he lost $30,000 in valuables since he would normally take his jewelry home with him whenever he closes about 17:00 hours during the week.
“I have learnt from the previous attack three years ago when I lost $3M,” he said.
The disgruntled owner of Esther’s jewelry said that this was the first time his jewelry establishment was robbed. He estimates his loss at $500,000. It was very frustrating since this is Christmas month.
“They even carried away my lighter,” the irate owner said.
The owner of Orion Technology was not willing to comment on his losses or what had transpired. Designers Barber Shop and Inner Circle were closed.
According to a citizen, the Police station closes early and whenever a person reports or files any complaints, or when there are robberies or anything at all the police always throw the cases behind their back and no solutions are forthcoming.”
At the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station an officer said that reports were made about the robberies and police ranks on duty almost all through the night, responded. They are trying to investigate what transpired.(Rabindra Rooplall)
