– was reportedly trying to acquire bogus document
By Michael Jordan and Latoya Giles
Just three days before he perished with two passengers in a head-on collision at Lethem, Juliano D’Aguiar was attempting to acquire a bogus minibus licence, reliable sources told Kaieteur News yesterday.
An official from the Police Traffic Department confirmed that D’Aguair was not licenced to drive a minibus when he died in Monday’s crash which claimed his life and those of two of his passengers.
Kaieteur News is in possession of the young man’s motor vehicle driver’s licence, which the Tabatinga, Lethem resident did not have with him when the tragedy occurred.
The document purports to show that D’Aguiar was authorised to ride a motorcycle, and drive a car and van.
But according to sources who spoke to Kaieteur News, both the car and van licences are false.
This newspaper was told that D’Aguiar had paid $15,000 for the bogus document.
On Friday, D’Aguiar, whose age is given as 21, reportedly travelled to Georgetown to meet persons who are involved in the bogus licence trade.
He allegedly handed over his documents to persons who would affix the bogus bus licence.
But on Monday, D’Aguiar was driving a bus when he slammed into an SUV.
D’Aguiar, passengers Louise Henry, and three-year-old Brandon Grimmond, were killed.
Some of the survivors were yesterday counting their lucky stars.
Munsehwar Churaman yesterday told this newspaper that he is thankful to be alive. He said that he was seated in the front seat of the sports utility vehicle (SVU) when the accident occurred. He sustained injuries to his left leg; his shoulder is dislocated, and two of his ribs are broken.
His face is still swollen. He opined that the two vehicles slammed into each other because of the dusty road.
Churaman said that he was leaving Lethem after he had finish conducting a promotional exercise when the bus swerved into their path.
“I think if the road didn’t have that amount of dust both drivers would have seen each other and the accident would have never happened,” he explained.
The man said that the minibus slammed into the side of the SUV. The driver of the SUV has since been taken into custody.
Another survivor, Maylene Foo, 27, of Lethem, was in severe pain and couldn’t speak. Both her arms are broken from the shoulder to wrists; she also sustained injuries to her foot and minor cuts to her face.
Regianna Donacemento, a Brazilian national, is a patient in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to her husband, Troy Ashby, his wife suffered a broken pelvis and arm. He said that she also has two fractured ribs and cuts to her face.
He said that he was informed about the accident after his mother called him.
Hussain Mohamed, 66, of Enmore is also a patient in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital. He was a passenger in the SUV.
He sustained injuries to neck, hands and foot. He was also receiving oxygen up to press time.
Kaieteur News was unable to speak with any of the man’s relatives since none was present at the hospital yesterday.
Attorney at law Leslie Sobers is said to be recovering well. He was heading to Lethem at the time of the accident.
Abdella Safir, 32, of Georgetown; and Brazilians Rafiel and Beutriz Moses ages 17 and 18; Wendell Caesar, Florence Grimmond, 45, the mother of the dead three-year-old; Renie Mc Dowell, 66, of London, England; Lucas Antone, 54, of Shea, South Rupununi; and Ryan Frices where all injured in the accident .
The accident occurred around 08:15 hours on Monday at a location called Hunt Oil, some two hours from Lethem by road.
