Residents of Sophia are calling on the relevant authorities to increase police presence in the area. They claim that they are being relentlessly targeted by bandits.
Over the past few weeks several vehicles have been broken into. Only Sunday evening, a minibus was almost completely stripped of its parts.
From all appearances there seems to be a group operating in the area targeting all types of vehicles.
Residents say that several reports have been made to the police but to date no arrests have been made.
The series of events started a few weeks ago when the leader of the Mothers Action Group was the victim, Ms. Doris Anetha Shelto.
Shelto said since her incident, residents were alerted but nothing seems to be deterring the persons from perpetrating their acts.
She told this newspaper that shortly after the thieves had struck at her premises, she received an anonymous call with information as to who was responsible for breaking into her vehicle.
According to Ms. Shelto, the person who was identified has since disappeared from the area. However, vehicles in the entire Sophia area are still being broken into.
Her car, a Toyota AT 192, was stripped of its lights, stereo and battery. Following that incident several other residents have suffered the same fate.
Many of them are expressing frustration over the matter since they are afraid to leave their vehicles unattended in the evenings.
This newspaper was told that even persons who secure their vehicles in fenced yards have not been spared by the robbers.
According to some of the victims, the individuals who are breaking into the vehicles seem to be experts as they often do so without breaking the windows.
“In the nights you secure your vehicle and when you wake up the next morning you just find the vehicle open with the lights gone and other parts gone,” one resident said.
