Making a late entry into the sport of hockey, somewhere in her 20’s, Sonia Jardine’s meteoric rise in the game has left team-mates, opponents, supporters and fans wondering what could have been had had she been introduced to the game much sooner.
After watching from the sidelines for several years, Jardine eventually took to the court 6 years ago and many who’ve seen her play from the start described her impact in the sport as an instant success.
This exciting GCC captain and striker possess two outstanding qualities that have made her into one of the most imposing strikers to defend against. Those two dangerous combinations are her lightning-quick hand speed and explosive acceleration that has left many opposing defenders in her wake which has also made her into one of if not the most prolific female goal-scorers on the local scene, while her statistics playing on the national team is just as impressive.
With dominant performances on the local scene since 2004 where she picked up her first of many Most Valuable Player awards in the GT&T national indoor championships, Jardine suffered the misfortune of having injuries keep her off the women’s national team until 2007. Upon making her debut for Guyana in the vital right midfield position of the starting line-up, her performance made an immediate impact as Guyana, new-comers to international competition having been absent for two decades, made it strongest showing to date narrowly missing out on the bronze medals in the Caribbean Championships.
Jardine has natural timing for the ball and her quick hands make her a productive goal scorer. She leads her club in the scoring bracket and has been the leading scorer in domestic competitions both indoor and outdoor over the past two years. She will surely be marshalling the midfield area for GCC in the upcoming international festival where her ability to turn steals into goals in the blink of an eye remains an enormous threat to opposing teams.
With her model good-looks and fast exciting play, Sonia Jardine is sure to capture the attention of those in attendance during the Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival.
